Preparation
Provisional LGV Licence
Before being allowed to drive a Large Goods Vehicle on public roads you must obtain a provisional LGV licence.
It is only possible to obtain a provisional licence for Class C vehicles when upgrading from a car licence, it will be necessary to pass a driving test in a Class C vehicle before being allowed to drive a C+E vehicle.
The Class C licence can then be used as a provisional licence for Class C+E vehicles.
To obtain a provisional licence you must be:
- Aged 18 years or older
- Hold a full car licence (Class B)
- Pass a medical examination
- Have an acceptable previous driving record
The provisional licence application form can be obtained from our offices, the Driver and Licensing Authority (DVLA) in Swansea or from a Regional Licensing Office.
Medical Examination
Your application for an LGV provisional licence must be accompanied by a completed medical report Form D4. This is obtained by attending a standard LGV drivers medical examination which can be obtained at your local health centre.
Alternatively we can arrange your medical for you at our own local medical centre (available only at our Leeds centre).
Driving Assessment
Once you have obtained your provisional licence it is advisable to take a driving assessment to determine the amount of training you will require to achieve test standard.
The assessment lasts approximately one hour and can usually be arranged at short notice.
Driving Assessments are held on Saturday mornings. On completion of your assessment we will provide you with a written report.
